About

At Lean Project Consulting, Inc. we bring our curiosity to bear in our daily work with our clients.  Asking, “Why do you say that?” is one of our habits.  So is using Taiichi Ohno’s 5-whys to get at the root cause(s) of issues, anomalies, variances and problems.  We noticed that in spite of the example we set, few people picked up our habit.  So we set out to teach people how to conduct a Good 5-Why™.

We started by developing a training aid for “going wide and deep” to get at the root causes.  We call it Good 5-Why A3 Template.  We then used the Training Within Industry (TWI) approach of Job Instruction (JI) to teach people how to use the A3 tool.  We were unsuccessful with JI.  There was much more to teach than we were able to do in one 15 – 20 minute session.  Sure, a few people picked it up, but not the large population that we intended to train.  So, we created our own TWI-style J-program, Conducting Good 5-Whys™ (JY).

We are now partnering with the TWI Institute® to make this program generally available through public sessions, train-the-trainer courses and this website. The course follows the TWI standard of 10 hours (2 Hrs/day for 5 consecutive days). Read more about it here.
