We learned about Ohno's 5 whys approach quite some time ago. It is routinely featured as a cornerstone of the Toyota approach, yet few companies have made it their habit to ask why 5 times. On a visit to Toyota's Georgetown, KY factory we heard Gary Convis, President North American Toyota Motors Manufacturing, say, "The vast majority of the improvements Toyota makes starts and finishes with a good 5-why." It is our goal to bring that habit of conducting good 5-whys to companies everywhere.
